GRADUATE RESEARCH PROFESSOR JOHN THOMPSON, one of the world's most eminent mathematicians, is the greatest Group Theorist of the twentieth century. His numerous honors include the Cole Prize of the American Mathematical Society (1966), The Fields Medal (1970), The Senior Berwick Prize of the London Mathematical Society (1982), The Sylvester Prize of The Royal Society (1987), The Wolf Prize of Israel (1992), The Poincare Medal of France (1992), and the National Medal of Science (2000). He is both a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was Rouse Ball Professor at Cambridge University before joining the University of Florida in 1993.
