John Milnor was awarded the Fields Medal in 1962. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a winner of the National Medal of Science, the Steele Prize and the Wolf Prize. For many years he was a permanent member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Since 1991 he has been the director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
