Title Of Talk: A New Proof of the Ramanujan Congruences for the Partition Function

Abstract: The three classical congruences for the partition function, p(5n + 4) = 0 (mod 5) p(7n + 5) = 0 (mod 7) p(11n + 6) = 0 (mod 11) have been proven via q-series identities, combinatorial arguments, and the theory of Hecke operators. A new proof of these congruences is presented which uses only basic results from the theory of modular forms on SL_2(Z). Furthermore, the proof naturally encompasses all three congruences in a single argument.
