PROGRAM IN ALGEBRA, NUMBER THEORY,
AND COMBINATORICS 2008-09

During the year 2008-09, the year long Program in Algebra, Number Theory, and Combinatorics (ANTC) will focus on Quadratic and Higher Degree Forms, areas which have seen dramatic progress in recent years most notably by Manjul Bhargava (Princeton). The program will be highlighted by two conferences. Both conferences are being funded by the National Science Foundation (PI: Krishnaswami Alladi; CoPI: Pham Huu Tiep).

  1. Student Workshop and Conference on Quadratic Forms, Sums of Squares, Theta Functions and Integral Lattices, March 7 - 15, 2009. Organizers - Krishnaswami Alladi, George Andrews, Alex Berkovich, Frank Garvan and Pham Tiep. The Student Workshop will be from Sat, Mar 7 to Tue, Mar 10. Professor Jonathan Hanke (University of Georgia) will be the Principal Instructor for the Student Workshop. He will give FOUR LECTURES ON QUADRATIC FORMS, one each morning. His lectures will be supplemented by Professor Hershel Farkas (Hebrew University, Jerusalem) who will lecture on theta functions on two of the afternoons, and by Professor Roger Baker (Brigham Young University) who will give the two remaining afternoon lectures at the Workshop.

The Conference on Quadratic Forms, Sums of Squares, Theta Functions and Integral Lattices will be from Wed, Mar 11 to Sun, Mar 15.

Akshay Venkatesh (Stanford University) will deliver the Eleventh Erdos Colloquium on Wed, Mar 11, 2009, at 5:00 pm as one of the featured talks of the conference.

Another highlight of the 2008-09 Program in ANTC is Third Ramanujan Colloquium by Dorian Goldfeld (Columbia University) on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 4:00 pm (note date change). This will be followed by two Number Theory Seminar talks by Professor Goldfeld on Tue, Feb 24 and Wed, Feb 25. The Ramanujan Colloquium is sponsored by Prof. George Andrews (Penn State University).

Visit of George Andrews: Evan Pugh Professor George Andrews (Penn State University) will be visiting from January 25 to March 31, 2009. He will give talks in the Number Theory Seminar and the Math Dept. Colloquium during Feb 2009 and an hour lecture at the March 2009 conference.

NEW 4pm, Tuesday, April 14: Center for Applied Math (CAM) Colloquium by Bertram Kostant (MIT) on Some exotic finite subgroups of E8 and certain 8-degree cyclotomic polynomials

  2. Conference on Higher Degree Forms, May 21-23, 2009.
Organizers - Krishnaswami Alladi and Pham Tiep.
Professor Manjul Bhargava who has done path breaking work on composition laws for higher degree forms, will give a series of (three to four) one hour lectures at the conference to provide core content that will be very helpful to graduate students and young researchers moving into the field.

For an update list of speakers see the Conference website.

Manjul Bhargava is a consultant for both conferences.

Both conferences are being funded by the National Science Foundation.
